Declaring Jesus’ Name

The name of Jesus is the most powerful word in existence. Whenever we speak it, we are speaking an earth-shaking name—the name that is above every other name.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth. (Phil. 2:9–10 NIV)

Speaking the wonderful name of Jesus is no small matter. It is a much stronger prayer than we realize.

Some of us are so familiar with His name that we don’t notice anymore when we use it, but Jesus is the One who holds all creation together:

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Col. 1:16–17 NIV)

When we declare Jesus’ name, we are calling on the One who holds all things—everywhere, all at the same time—to come and help us. His name is not distant from anything around us. All things were created in Him, and His name is intricately involved in everything we could possibly be concerned about.

He is holding all things together, including us and the person, place, or situation on our heart.

Here is one brief description of Jesus:

For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
    And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa. 9:6 NLT)

When we declare His name, that is what we are declaring: the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. We are asking Jesus to come be Lord over the situation, person, place, or thing we’re concerned for. We are speaking who He is over it.

Where do you need to declare the name of Jesus?

Over your dating life? Your marriage? Your family or finances? Your job? Your vehicle or your house?

His name contains worlds and stars and planets, things in heaven and things on earth, visible and invisible. It is not a magic word, where we speak it and suddenly everything goes the way we want it to, but it is a Lordship word. When we declare His name, we are declaring the fullness of God, because that is what Jesus is (Col. 2:9).

This week, think about the power of Jesus’ name and consider where you need to declare His name in your life.
